The spacecraft is making a series of close passes, using Mercury's gravity, to alter its trajectory so that it will be able to enter orbit around Mercury in March 2011. The close approaches also allow scientists to get a look at a part of Mercury that was not seen by Mariner 10 in the 1970s.
